- Part II -

(Please read part 1 of this story, so this can make more sense)

This is how my “unusual briefing” was sent to my friend and designer Isabella when she was creating my logo. A set of different paragraphs telling some “fragments” of memories of my relationship/fascination with lines. I am quoting myself because these are from a 2016 email.

“When I was a child I had no talent for drawing anything. At least, that is how I saw myself, and never had any training or art classes to focus on that.

When I started to take music theory lessons and piano lessons I fell in love with staves, clefs, sheet music. But the staves, ah, the staves – that magical set of five parallel lines and the spaces between them, on which the notes can be written – were fascinating to me. So I started to draw staves like mantras. Every time I was anxious or needed concentration; before taking an exam; if I needed some distraction… I don’t even know why. I just loved to draw those lines.”

“During my childhood, almost every weekend, I went with my family to our “second home” in Praia da Costa (Costa Beach), Vila Velha. Living in a very small town (at that time, 7,000 people) we would constantly go to “the city” where we had our doctors appointments, dentist, shopping, entertainment, swimming lessons and so on. 180 Km in the car, distracting myself by looking at the window and the lines of the long road. One of the best parts: to look at the train tracks (lines), in some parts of the road that I could follow it.  The beauty of the lines of Pontões Capixabas Mountains was also a constant in my life. Pancas, my hometown, is surrounded by them.”

“When I was 17, I moved to Rio de Janeiro to go to College, major in Music. I had to take one class in Studio Art as part of the program and I was terrified. I remember the first time I had to do a drawing project in my class and I just drew the lines of my hands. Slowly I started working on these lines to do all my projects. By the end of the semester, my professor told me to bring my notebook (covered with lines) to Parque Lage Visual Arts School. I was in shock she liked my work. Rio was still a big and new city to me, and I had no idea that Parque Lage had a prestigious school for visual arts. I also did not know how to take a bus to go there. So I did not go, and I still regret it to this day.”

“Few years after that, starting my career in Advertising, a good friend introduced me to the lines of I Ching. The musical staves – 5 lines - transformed into many hexagrams, the 6 lines combined into many different forms, giving insights into human nature. No need to say I was also in love with that. “

“And life goes on.”

“Just another day, by serendipity, I walked by the Museum of Art and Design (NY) and decided to check the Harry Bertoia exhibition. I had no idea he has worked as a jeweler and jewelry designer. I was in awe. He also has created amazing sculptures with sounds. Not to mention all the lines in his artwork. I was hit by all that in such a positive way. His lines brought me all these memories about my connection with music, drawings, jewelry. I just love when this kind of thing happens.”

So, I sent Isabella some pictures of this exhibition and some pictures of my drawings. It was not necessary to send her the pictures of the mountains in Pancas or the pictures of all the beauty of Rio: beaches, mountains, Burle Marx Parks, etc. She lives there. She knows me so well, as I said before.

After she read my e-mail, she responded: “the best briefing of my life”.

She sent me this logo. I loved it right away. No need for adjustments.

Look at my logo again. See how much you can see of my story in its lines.

Love,

Anna.
