After a long-awaited visit to Japan, I was dazzled by a small and beautiful collection of tourmalines. Inspired by all the zen gardens that I had seen in Kioto, I made this necklace as a way to express my gratitude for being able to visit such a special place. The necklace fits perfectly into my Folhas Collection.

From 2012 to 2020, I was lucky to live within walking distance of Manhattan’s Central Park. I used to love to take my walks there and absorb all I could: its nature, art, diversity of people and their many activities. There was always something new to see, always something that surprised me. At one point, after photographing all different kinds of leaves, I printed my favorites and started drawing on top of them, combining shapes, mixing their lines, until I came up with this design that became the base motif of my Folhas Collection. Today I live surrounded by enormous, beautiful trees, whose wonderful green leaves continue to inspire me, bringing me much peace and joy.

I love the exercise of simplifying everything I do – not just in my designs, but also in life. I enjoy the simple, basic things, the ones that feel easy, comfortable, unpretentious. I was playing with some leaf-shaped tourmalines and their unique hues of green, like the ones I see in the spring and summer mornings from my bedroom window or during my walks. The diamonds are the reflection of the sun, adding light and constantly transforming its shades of green.

I find these tourmalines stunning, not just because of their colors but also because of their unique shapes. The combination of these hues of green and blue is calming, yet striking. All I had to do was add a “gold frame” for them to become part of my Folhas Collection.

This very simple, yet elegant necklace brings the base of the design (motif) of the Folhas Collection to the spotlight. This was the first design I made using CAD (Rhino program) and because it also reminds me of a rhinoceros horn, I like to call it my “Rhino” piece.

This is a “slice” of my Folhas Cuff transformed into a powerful ring. The structure of its sides make this ring a nice statement piece without losing the delicate lines that form its “leaves”. This piece is my version of a signet ring, but instead of a symbol of family or heritage, I have made lines of nature as its centerpiece.
